Blades on the Brink of Elimination

For Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 and is filed in News

Tuesday night at O’Hehir Arena, the Mark’s Work Wearhouse Mount Pearl Junior Blades were defeated 5-2 by the Junior Celtics. The loss puts the Blades 1 loss from elimination in this years St.john’s Junior Hockey League Playoffs.

The Blades opened the scoring  when Brian Hogan scored on the power play. The Blades went into the 1st intermission with a 1-0 lead. The Celtics evened the score early in second as Matthew Oates scored 23 seconds into the frame. The Blades were then given a 4 minute power play, in which the Celtics controlled much of the first 1:30, creating many odd-man rushes, and Christopher Ryan even scored on one of them, putting the Celtics up 2-1. Mark Hand did convert on that power play, tying the game for the Blades. However, before the end of the 2nd period Tyler Parsons scored for the Celtics, putting the Celtics up 3-2 heading into the third period. The Blades came out flat in the third period and the Celtics scored 2 more times as Travis Curtis and Justin LeBlanc converted on opportunities. The Celtics controlled most of the play in this game as they outshot Mount Pearl 47 to 36. If it wasn’t for the play of goaltender Nick Rodway, who made 42 saves in the loss (many of them spectacular), the score would have been a lot higher for the Celtics. Rodway was named Jungle Jim’s Visiting Team Player of the Game, while Tyler Parsons received it for the home team.

The Blades will look to stave off elimination Friday night at the Glacier in game 4, game time is 7:30 pm.

For Monday, March 8th, 2010 and is filed in Playoffs, Summary

Celtics goal scorers were Matthew Oates, Jeff Hustler, Shawn Roberts, Michael Ricketts and Travis Curtis. Nick Rodway was in net for the Blades, while David Parsons was between the pipes for the Celtics.

The series switched to the Glacier for Sunday night, and the end result was the same, a 5-4 loss. The Celtics tacked on another 2 goals before Mount pearl attempted a comeback. Down 5-2 late in the third period, Bailey and Lucas Dearing scored late in the game, but it appeared to be too little, too late, as the Celtics came away with another 5-4 victory. Rodway was in net for the Blades again, while Andrew Stanford played for the Celtics.

            Semi-Final Preview

For Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 and is filed in News

The Mark’s Work Wearhouse Mount Pearl Junior Blades will meet the Junior Celtics in the Semi-Final of the St.John’s Junior League Playoffs. This is shaping up to be a good series. Mount Pearl has won the season series 3-1, but the Celtics are one of the leagues hottest teams, going since 10-1-1 since December, with their only loss coming against the Blades. Both teams are coming off sweeps in their first round series, with the Celtics easily defeating Avalon, while the Blades had a little tougher time with Bell Island, needing 2 overtime wins to complete the sweep.

Both of these teams rely heavily on offense, as the Blades finished first in the league in goals scored for the regular season, while the Celtics finished only 3 goals behind them. The Celtics are led by League goal leader Kyle Pardy who scored 36  goals on the year, and totaled 53 points. Shawn Roberts was 1 point behind with 52 points and James Cadigan led all defenseman in points with 41. The Blades attack is more balanced, but is anchored by captain Steve Bailey who was second in the league in scoring with 57 points. Mike Rose finished the year with 40 points, and Aaron Schwartz with 38 points. The Blades will need these 3 players, and upstart rookie Robert Barrett to continue their strong play from the first series into this series with the Celtics.

While both teams are strong with the puck, they are also among the league leaders in Goals Against. The Celtics were second in the league in GA, while the Blades were third. The Blades will lean heavily on Nick Rodway who was 4-0 in the series against Bell Island. The Celtics however have 2 goalies they will depend on. David Parsons and Andrew Stanford will likely split the load, but both goalies are more than capable of carrying a team deep into a series.

Game 1 of this series will be Friday night, March 5th, at O’Hehir Arena, game time 7:45pm.

Game 2 will go Sunday night, March 7th, at the Glacier, with the puck dropping at 7:30pm.

How will the Blades/Celtics series go? Leave a comment.

In the other semi-final series, the Sr.John’s Junior Caps await the winner of the CBN/Southern Shore series. CBN had a 3-0 series lead, but the Shore has since battled back to force a game 7 on Tuesday night
